Dare to Take a Risk in Retirement

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the Life you imagine.~ Henry David Thoreau

By this time in our lives we all are pretty much aware of the kind of risk-taker we are. Some of us are happy living a life within defined boundaries not too risky but definitely predictable and safe. Others need the feeling of adrenaline rushing though veins to really feel alive and engaged. But for most of us finding excitement in retirement life is somewhere in between – not too risky, not overly safe.

In retirement no matter where we previously resided on our personal risk scale we may find ourselves slowly drifting toward that safer side of things. For some it is easier to play it safe although not nearly as fulfilling. We are getting used to making trade-offs and accepting things for what they are. After all we are getting old – what more can we expect?

NO WAY!

If we really want to live a fulfilling and worthwhile life retirement is the perfect opportunity to get a bit adventurous, take a little risk and get the juices flowing again. We have the time to do what we want and baring physical limitations we should be able to push the envelope and seek out activities outside of our normal comfort zone. Being comfortable is safe and predictable and easy but is that all there is? Are you willing to settle for just existing and calling that your life? Why just settle?

This week’s US News & World blog examines the opportunity for each of us to step outside our comfort zone to explore the exciting world around us. If you have a moment take a look at Retire Outside Your Comfort Zone. Take a chance and live the life you deserve. Don’t be just an observer when you can be an active participant. Live the life you imagine!
